Episode 16: Goal Setting with Patti Sampson
Patti’s a nerd who loves goal setting! Curt loves humouring Patti’s nerdiness.
So guess who did a goal setting episode!
Use this workshop as a tool to help your camp staff identify and work toward priorities, or use it for your own purposes.
Feel free to follow along with the episode, which is an overview of a workshop Patti has run with her staff in the past. Set some of your own goals and get excited about the upcoming year!
To follow along you’ll need:
- Paper (a few sheets of loose leaf or a notebook)
- Pen or marker
- post-it (optional – depending on if you want to write on your hand or not)
Patti and Curt then go through a series of questions to determine what a goal actually is, and more specifically what a SMART goal is.
Patti shares information from the Harvard Study conducted in 1979.
Curt works through an example goal that has to do with posting more often on his blog and Patti walks him through a little activity to highlight the importance of setting and writing down goals based on Peter Senge’s “Creative Tension” Method from his book The Fifth Discipline (Which Patti TOTALLY called The Fifth Element during the podcast… Curt even made a joke about it and she STILL didn’t catch on that it was the wrong name… Awwwkwarrrd!!!).
Next Patti and Curt chat about some tools people can use to be more productive and reach the goals they’ve set for themselves.
Here are a list of all the books & resources mentioned in the podcast.

This excellent advice was posted to Reddit in 2013 or 2014 – but there’s a lot of “colourful” language in it, so be aware of that.
