Episode 17: Hiring International Camp Staff with Mike Fried of CCUSA
Do you have questions about international camp staff? Mike Fried, long time camp professional and Vice President of Camp Counsellors Division for CCUSA tells us all about their program and shares some tips on making the experience great for you and your new staff.
We learn about Mike’s path to his current role and why he’s passionate about working in the camping industry, “most people who’ve found careers in camping find it’s something that allows them to just really enjoy what they’re doing as well as to make a living”.
Mike fills us in on the process of bringing international staff to your camp through CCUSA, explains what a designated sponsor is, and talks about hiring through job fairs and the online system.
He also discusses the major benefits of bringing a diverse, international staff to your program as well as some of the challenges that camp directors may face when hiring staff from different countries, and how to mitigate some of those potential challenges before the staff even arrive at camp.
We find out what it’s like going on a first “Walmart trip” for international staff and Mike shares one of his (very funny) favourite camp stories. Then he shares his Lego origin story with us and what he would do with an unlimited amount.
He also shares an awesome bonus story about the universal experiences of camp from the ICF Congress in Russia.
Mike’s message to all Rec Head & Camp Nerd listeners is to get out and visit other camps to see how they’re run- and our hosts agree!
It’s one of the most important things you can do to improve your own program and grow as a professional – aside from hiring international staff, of course. 😉
