Episode 20: Running a Mobile Day Camp with Raymond Varner

A day camp that travels from community to community, state to state… with a climbing wall?
Sounds pretty spectacular to us! Our hosts chat with Raymond Varner, owner and director of Camp Ruwà and he tells them all about his new mobile camp program, growing up attending camp every summer in “mini vegas”, how he creates “contagious fun” for his campers and what Ruwà actually means.

Ray was a life long camper and knew he wanted to start his own camp one day to bring adventure and experience to as many people as possible, he researched possible program structures and realized that a mobile camp made the most sense for him right now.

He runs 10 weeks of camp, each week he partners with a different church in a different community, and as part of his community building he finds host families each week to house his “God Squad” counsellors who travel with him, plus each church provides volunteer staff for that week as well.

His camp offers a variety of activities including a mobile rock wall, inflatables, crafts, and a whole lot more, and the ability for campers to begin (or expand on) a relationship with their local church.

Ray walks us through what a typical day is like at his camp, what his biggest challenge is in running this type of program, and gives some sound advice for anyone who is interested in opening a similar program.
Then we find out what he’d do with an unlimited amount of legos!
