Episode 24: Pool and Water Safety with Eric “Shendy” Shendelman
Shendy fills us in on his journey to opening Shendy’s Swim Centre, where his passion for teaching water safety began, and talks about his working personality vs his after work personality.
We also learn about his moment of glory on the golf course.
Curt tells us about his favourite submission from his pool and waterfront round table – from Tricia Kline that has to do with tennis balls in a pool, and spelling!
Shendy plays a round of two truths and a lie.
Can you guess which one is the lie?
Almost 50 years old
Married for almost 24 years
Runs a chicken business on the side
He also gives advice on ensuring that you have developed practiced procedures in place, talks about how the temperature of the water, the facility, the environment and the motivation and qualifications of the staff can impact the program.
Shendy talks about why it’s important to have safety training in camp and recreation facilities and identifies some of the gaps in those programs and the three most important things they can do to provide safer aquatics. Then he gives great advice for managing staff and identifying who’s on duty when participants are in the water, and talks about some of his favourite water games and activities.
A poem by Shendy
“Figure out a way to bring people in.
Start out slowly,
and teach them to swim.”
